This blog is to update everyone on what goes on at Project Sage Horse Rescue everyday!
7/20/10- Everything is going awesome at our new farm!! The horses are all very happy and we are loving having a nice
riding ring! Thank you to all my amazing volunteers Anna, Katie, Belle, Natalie, Cadie, and Cynthia for their constant
support and help around the farm. Thank you to everyone who signed up for the Mommy and Me program, I can use a few
more people so please if you are interested e-mail me!!
Also, we are desperately in need for wormers, fly spray,
Showsheen, and corn oil!!!! If anyone would like to donate these items feel free to stop by the farm and visit
the horses or they can be mailed to our mailing address! If you would like to stop in to visit the horses they would
appreciate if you brought them some carrots! They love anyone who brings a bag of carrots!
Thank you to everyone
who came out to our first fundraising meeting. It went great and I was happy to meet some new people!
Houston
is doing very well under tack thanks to Natalie, his trainer. Billy got out for a walk under tack today and enjoyed
himself as well as Hunter.
7/15/10-
I'd like to announce that Project Sage has moved to Ketcham Farm in Northport!
All of the rescue horses have settled into their new home and are very happy!
Since starting Project Sage
in 2007 we have rescued over 40 horses. Our goal for 2010 is to raise that number to 80 horses. A huge part of
rescuing horses is having the funding to do so. We are looking to start a team of people that work together to plan
fundraiser's and come up with ideas to help the rescue. Whether your a horse person or an animal lover we can all join
together to raise money for this worthy cause. I know many of you have some great ideas to help Project Sage!
I also have many ideas that I need help putting into action. I'd like to have monthly meetings to plan fundraiser's
and discuss ideas. Our first meeting will be on July 17th at 12:00 pm at our new farm in Northport. The address
is 386 Bread and Cheese Hollow Rd in Northport. You will be the first to get a sneak peek of the farm and the horses
before our open house. Everyone is welcome to come out and share ideas and discuss ways to help the rescue. We
will also be discussing volunteering at the farm at the meeting so if you are interested in helping around the farm please
come down. We will be having an orientation to volunteering at 1:00 pm so anyone who is interested please stop
by. For anyone who is interested in the "Mommy and Me" program we will be assigning horses at 11 am and I
will give a short introduction to the program.
Project Sage Horse Rescue is starting
a new program at our new farm in Northport. We are looking for horse lovers 16 and older that want to come to the farm
and spend time one on one with a rescue horse. You will be assigned one horse to work with and spend time with.
Each horse will have two "Mommy's". We have many horses that need TLC and this program gives the horses a
chance to have a one-on-one relationship with someone until they are adopted. Your responsibility will be working on
ground manners, grooming, and riding. You will be responsible for the over all care of the horse. We always have
older retired horses that just need to be pampered. All applicants MUST be experienced with horses. References
will be checked and there is a short interview process. This is a great program for people who are looking to help the
rescue horses become more adoptable.
I look forward to seeing everyone this Saturday!
7/8/10- Also want to say congrats to Jacalyn on her adoption of Eddison! We are so happy he will be heading to his new
home this week. Best of luck to Jacalyn and Eddison on many happy trails together! We will miss you Eddie!
7/8/10- I'm so happy to announce that Project Sage is now located at Ketcham Farm in Northport!!! This is a HUGE
move for us and we are thrilled to lease this facility. We will be having an open house in the near future so everyone
can come and meet the rescue horses and see our new home. All donations to help pay for hay and grain at our new barn
are greatly appreciated!! We also have a few new rescue horses coming in this weekend so please check the website for
new updated pictures.
We are starting a few new program at the new farm and are also looking for some volunteers
that want to muck and help around the farm. Please e-mail me for more info!
6/27/10- Just want to say CONGRATS to Lynn and family on their adoption of Peter Parker. We are thrilled that he
was adopted today but I will miss him! I have really become fond of him and will miss our trail rides together!
A huge thank you to everyone who made his rescue possible and for Lakewood Stables for fostering him. A special thanks
to Tish for her hard work on rehabbing this pony. He looks amazing, a different horse. Everyone put so much
work into this pony and it is great to see him going to such a great family. Good luck Peter, we will miss you!
Another thank you to EVERYONE who helped rescue our new horse Hunter - A special thanks to Pat H for her generous donation
that helped get this boy home. Also thank you to Maxine for her extremely generous donation and for coming to help unload
him and get him settled. Thank you to Lakewood Stables for fostering him. Thank you to my mom for her relentless
work raising funds on him. Thank you to Penny for letting us use her paypal for donations since ours is down.
Thank you to everyone on facebook that donated and everyone on ABR that donated. This was a huge joint effort to pull
this horse last minute. He is an amazing horse and right when he walked off the trailer and put his head in my arms.
Hunter thanks everyone for helping to get him out of the kill pen and into the rescue!
6/14/10- Everything is going really well for all of our rescue horses. I took Eddison and Parker out on trail rides
yesterday and they were both perfect. They went great on the road and really seemed to enjoy it! If anyone is
looking for a trail horse or pony these two horses have shown that they are 100% bomb proof out on trail. Perfect for
a nervous trail rider or someone who wants to go out and have fun. Both horses load on trailers with no issues so they
would be perfect to put on the trailer and go for a nice ride in one of Long Islands parks!!
All of the other horses
are also doing very well. We have some really nice horses right now so if anyone is looking please spread the word about
our amazing horses. They all have coggins and are UTD on shots.
Just want to take a moment to thank Lakewood
Stables for fostering 3 Project Sage horses. All three horses look amazing and the barn has really worked hard to help
rehab Parker. He looks amazing now and I could have not done that without the help of everyone at Lakewood Stables.
Eddison, Grace, and Parker are all fostered at Lakewood.
6/8/10- So happy to announce that Bentley is now a GELDING!!! He came through the surgery great and is doing VERY well.
He is now looking for a home as a companion horse. Please spread the word about this sweet horse. He is truly
one of a kind and as sweet as they come!
6/8/10- Here is another picture from the expo...I would like to thank the NE Expo for choosing me as the reciepient for
the Star Award at the NE Expo this year. I was so suprised and excited to be given this award!

6/5/10- Here are some pictures from the NE Expo at Belmont Park last weekend. Thank you to everyone who came out
and supported the rescue!!

More Pics from the Expo!!

5/19/10- This Saturday we are having a fundraiser at Tin Alley Grill! Please spread the word and bring all your friends.
This is a great opportunity to raise some money for the horses and have a great time with friends!
I want to
thank Chloe's adopters for having a Kentucky Derby fundraiser and raising money for Project Sage. I was thrilled to
hear how much money was raised. This money will help immensely over the next month. Thank you so much and it was
great to see Anna riding Chloe around her ring. They are an amazing team and it is great to watch.
Dreamer was
gelded 2 weeks ago and is doing very well. He is growing and is really looking for his forever home. Please spread
the word.
Our new horse, Houston, is doing great and is really starting to trust everyone. He is a very sweet
horse and with some time he will be amazing under saddle.
All the horses are doing good, please spread the word
about everyone that we have for adoption. They all would love new homes before the summer really hits!
We are
collecting used/new tack for an upcoming tack sale we will be having. If you have anything to donate please contact
me at Sportie1030@aol.com
If you want to plan a fundraiser for Project Sage please email me with your ideas. I can always use help raising
money for the rescue. Every dollar that is raised helps so much. Please consider planning a fundraiser.
It can be something as simple as a bake sale at a horse show or a garage sale. It's summer time and if you have some
free time consider planning something for Project Sage.
I hope to see EVERYONE this Saturday night!!
5/6/10- Everyone check out Houston, our newest rescue horse! He's a VERY nice horse and would be perfect for any type
of riding. Also check out our upcoming fundraiser at Tin Alley Grill in Garden City under the Event section! Please
come out and support the rescue. All the bartenders tips will be donated to Project Sage! If you eat there during
the day please mention Project Sage!
4/5/10- Parker is doing awsome. He is being ridden on a daily basis and is learning very quickly. He is VERY
bomb proof, nothing seems to phase him. We are quickly falling in love with this little guy. Austin's training
is also in full swing now that the weather is nice. He is being lunged/ridden on a daily basis.
Just want to quickly
thank my student Katie for helping train Parker. We've been putting a lot of work into him and it is really paying off.
It's great to see a pony who was so nervous become so friendly and loving. He's made so much progress.
Sal is
doing good, he enjoyed a long grooming today and watched the other horses train. He loves to stand at the gate and watch
everyone ride. If anyone is looking for a companion Sal would make a great addition to any family.
3/21/10
Thank
you to the Hewitt, Riverside, and Wilson schools of Rockville Centre. These schools joined to help their SADD (Students
Against Destructive Decisions) club memebers raise money for Project Sage. They raised money by selling paper horseshoes
to the families at their schools. They made this mural and hung it in the schools main lobby with all the "shoes"
they sold. I spoke to this group to kickoff their fundraiser and explained to them the importance of being a responsible
horse and pet owner and what can happen if you're not. Some of these kids didn't even know there were so many horses on Long
Island....but they know now! I was so impressed by these students and the hard work they put into this. You kids
rock! Special thanks to Mrs. Panebianco, Mrs. Conlon, and Ms. Volpe for all of your help with this wonderful fundraiser.
3/2/09- Yesterday Cooper was adopted! I just want to say congrats to Dorothe on adopting him! He's a wonderful
horse and I'm so excited for him!
Thank you to everyone at Lakewood Stables for being so welcoming to us while we boarded
Cooper there!
Another successful adoption. Hoping for many more this spring!!
2/23/09- Quick update on Bentley - There are new picture of him posted - He is doing amazing and is really a fighter.
He will be up for adoption soon. He's one of a kind!!!
Cooper is also doing really well. He's slowly
coming out of his shell and is a mush, I've grown very fond of him. Parker is also slowly starting to trust me which
is great! He nickers when you walk into the barn is a very sweet little pony. All in all the horses are doing
well.
Our coffee fundraiser is still going on so e-mail me if you want to buy some coffee!!!
2/11/10- Dug out the barn this morning!!! I have to say that anyone who loves snow does not have horses!!!
Took some time to get all the horses out. The two new boys are doing well. Cooper is VERY quiet and seems like
he would be perfect for anyone. We are going to ride him soon and I will post an update. Parker is also doing
great, he is quiet and sweet and is such a ham! He nickers when he sees me walking up to the barn. I have to say
he has the cutest face and just loves to be scratched! These two boys are so nice and I know they both will find perfect
homes.
We are having a coffee fundraiser. If you are interested in buying some bags of coffee please e-mail me
at Sportie1030@aol.com. The more coffee we sell the more horses we are able to help so please consider buying some.
Brody was
moved to Roxanne's and will be put up for adoption soon. He's a VERY talented horse and I know someone will fall in
love with him although I will be sad to see him go!
Billy had his first ride two days ago!!! I'm SO proud
of this horse. He has come so very far in his rehab thanks to Roxanne. Billy was quiet and seemed to enjoy the
ride after a few minutes. He is going to be an amazing horse for someone, please spread the word about this sweet horse.
He would be a great trail horse or for light riding in the ring as long as there is no deep footing.
Austin is also
coming along. I've been working on his ground manners and lunging and he is slowly learning everything. He
has really become a sweet horse and just needs some finishing under saddle. Someone looking for a basic dressage
horse would love him or he would also be a nice pleasure horse.
Spread the word about the Project Sage horses
- They would all love a new home!!! Remember, when you adopt from us you open up a spot for a new horse...

2/6/10 - Yesterday we made the trip for the auction to pick up Parker, our newest addition. In the morning a
grey horse caught my eye on the list of horses going to the auction. I sent out a mass e-mail asking for a foster.
Thank you SO much to Stacey for stepping forward and offering to pay the horses board. I can't thank you enough
for helping to give this wonderful horse a second chance. We were able to pick up this horse, who is now named Cooper,
yesterday and he is now stabled at Lakewood Stables.
For this rescue effort I have so many people to thank.
First off, Conni Kalman, for offering to drive up to the auction with her trailer and pick up these two lucky guys.
I honestly could not have done it with out Conni. Thank you to Cynthia for helping to bail out Parker and pick out his
name and for driving to the auction with us to help out. Also thank you to Cynthia for helping me get both the boys
settled in last night. Thank you to Tish from Lakewood Stables for coming out to the rescue barn at 9 pm to check
on Parker and for helping me rig up a hay net. Thank you to Donna for donating towards Parker, Thank you to Jill
for donating towards Parker. Thank you to everyone you sent donations in for Parker. We appreciate every donation
that comes in the mail and it helps give these horses a second chance.
We are thrilled to welcome Peter Parker
and Cooper into our rescue. They both will be evaluated and put up for adoption so keep checking back. They are
both VERY sweet boys. They both will make awesome horses for someone. I spent the whole day with Parker and I
have to say he is a gem. Very level headed and sweet. I stopped in at Lakewood and spent some time with Cooper
who is also such a sweet horse.
Another great rescue effort...Thank you to everyone involved...Two very lucky
horses got a second chance...
Pictured to the right is Brody in the orange blanket munching on his lunch and Sal in
the green!
1/29/10- Today we rescued a horse from the feed lot. I have SOO many people to thank for this effort. Everyone
who donated to this horse to start with. Cynthia for donating toward his expenses. Roxanne for offering a stall
to this boy. Jill Kaplan and everyone at Temple Or Elohim. Everyone who e-mailed to help pay for his transport.
Everyone who is sending donations for this sweet horse. He will be boarded at the auction for a few days. Hopefully
we will pick him up Wednesday. I'm sure I'm forgetting some people who I have to thank. This horse is VERY cute
and nice under saddle. Going to make someone a great horse in a few weeks. Anyone whos looking for a nice trail
horse keep this guy in mind!
This picture was taken at the auction. How cute is he?! We are very excited to get him home and happy!!!
Please
send Project Sage a friend request on facebook. Our facebook name is "Brittany - Project Sage". I update
it daily and it gives everyone an idea or what goes on during the day at Project Sage.
I hope everyone is staying
warm out there. It was bitter cold today. Austin, Sal, and Brody were out in the field and were happy to come
in at the end of the day!
1/27/10- Okay guys, I need help! We are starting a "Coffee for a Cause" fundraiser. It's just like
selling Girl Scout Cookies. I give you an order from and you SELL SELL SELL!!! We hope to make a large profit
off of this fundraiser and our goal is to sell 500 bags. Each bag is $10.00 for a bag of ground coffee.
Many different flavors plus hot chocolate and cappuccino! They sent us samples and this coffee is to die for!
The horses are asking EVERYONE to please contact me and sell coffee. You collect money up front and then after the order
is placed we deliver it to you and you give to to everyone who ordered. The fundraiser will last for 3 weeks and I'm
hoping to start in a week or so. E-mail me at Sportie1030@aol.com if you would be interested in selling for the Project Sage horses!
Our newest horse, Brody, is doing very well.
He seems to be enjoying his turnout and he is a barn favorite already. He's such a sweet horse!

1/25/10- Yesterday we got in a new horse, his original name was Bentley but he have one of those already so we are renaming
him "Brody". He seems to like this name. This horse is VERY nice. I rode him the other day and
he was a pleasure to work with. Very willing and just a fun horse to ride. I want to thank Tish for telling us
about Brody and for helping him get to our rescue. Thank you to Cynthia for meeting me over the weekend and helping
me ride him and get to know him. He's a very nice horse and everyone was so excited when he arrived yesterday.
Thank you to Maxine and Katie for helping me re-do his stall and helped getting Brody adjusted to the new barn.
We are
currently looking for sponsors for the upcoming horse expo being held at Belmont Race Track. We are looking for companies
to sponsor Project Sage for the expo. Your companies name will be on our banner and also in all of our brochures.
A sponsorship is $175.00. Please consider helping Project Sage get to the expo this year! We want to spread the
word about the rescue and educate people on the horrors of horse slaughter. Please e-mail me for more info!
1/22/10- Everyone check on the new pics of Billy. Finally got some clear pictures of him all tacked up. Everyone
only has nice things to say about this horse!
Please everyone, I beg you, spread the word to EVERYONE you know about
Sal. He's been with the rescue a VERY long time and he really wants a new home. He is our "babysitter"
and has taught all of our young horses how to behave! He loves other horses and really is a good teacher. He is
easy to deal with and is not destructive when is comes to fences or anything like that. He will make someone a great
pet. I tell him everyday "give it a few more days buddy". The months pass and Sal is still waiting for
a new home. If you have friends with a big horse farm, tell them about Sal. He's a great horse and I can promise
you he won't dissapoint!
Austin's training is coming along nicely and he is doing very well.
Bentley is
also doing GREAT!

1/8/09- I want to take a moment to say congrats to Anna on her adoption of Chloe!! I'm so excited that your family has
decided to adopt this amazing horse. You two are a great match and Chloe is a very lucky horse to have found such
a great family. It was amazing to watch the bond grow between Anna and Chloe. Within a week Chloe no longer looked
to me for treats, she was too busy looking for Anna! Another great success story. Tomorrow I am going to watch
Anna's lesson on Chloe, they have grown into an amazing team. Sometimes a horse and a kid just click, I think thats
what happened here..
Also a quick update on my favorite boy, Bentley. He's doing REALLY well. All donations
are greatly appreciated to help pay for Bentley's board and medical care. Thank you to everyone at Code Blue Farm for
being so welcoming to Bentley and I. His balance is improving and his coordination is slowly coming back. It's
amazing to see the treatment working so well. He's a special horse and had touched many people. Please keep Bentley
in your prayers for his continued recovery.
Austin was moved to our barn in Muttontown for further training. Anyone
who sees this horse is going to be in awe of his beauty. He's an amazing mover. I can't say enough good things
about him. Would be a very nice horse for either trail riding or dressage.
As always I want to thank my
amazing fosters...Regina, Jessica, Roxanne, and the Ello family. You are all amazing people for helping the Project
Sage horses.
Also a huge thank you to Maxine who has helped me so much with taking care of Bentley and lending a helping
hand all the time. You are the best and I would have been lost this past month without you.
Keep warm everyone!
1/1/2010- HAPPY NEW YEAR! We have some great news to share today. Regina has decided to adopt Champ.
I'm so happy about this. He's an amazing horse and I'm so happy he is finally is his forever home.
I
also want to thank Babylon Rider Center for giving Project Sage the opportunity to place their retired school horses
into new loving homes. I would like to thank the FOBS for helping us place 4 horses into new, loving homes. Thank
you to Johna, Sharon, Carolyn, and Kate for giving old school horses new homes.
We just took in a new horse about 2
weeks ago, Bentley, an OTTB stallion who has EPM. He is doing wonderful and we are aggressively fighting the EPM.
Please say a prayer for this sweet boy. Thank you to One Horse at a Time for donating towards Bentleys EPM medicine.
It is very expensive and we could have NEVER done this without you. Bentley and I thank you from the bottom of our
hearts. Thank you to the FOBs who took an interest in Bentley and donated towards his expensive treatment. He's
an amazing horse and he has really made his way into may peoples hearts. All donations made towards Bentley's upkeep
is greatly appreciated.
Congrats to my new adopters. It's been an amazing year for Project Sage and we hope next
year will be even bigger. Thank you to everyone who has helped the rescue grow this past year. 2010
is going to be an amazing year!
12/20/09- Please check out the Rehab page to see the newest addition to the Project Sage family, Bentley. He is currently
being treated for EPM and needs everyones help! Please consider making a donation in his name!
12/10/09- I'm happy to report that Petunia was adopted this past weekend. Thank you to Regina for fostering her and
basically raising her.
Please consider adding one of the Project Sage horses to your christmas list this year.
Stick a few dollars in a card and help buy your favorite horse a bag of grain for christmas. The horses love getting
christmas cards.
The rest of the "team" is doing well. Chloe is doing GREAT under tack. Thank
you to Anna for working with her everyday. It takes a lot off my plate and I am so grateful for your help. I'm hoping
to get her going over small jumps soon. She is such a great horse to be around. Very polite and eager to
please.
Sal and Grace are doing well. Still both looking for their forever homes. Spread the word
about Sal. He needs someone to love him and just let him be a horse. He would love to be your new best friend.
Billy's
foster, Roxanne, reports that he is doing well. I'm hoping to ride him this weekend if the weather holds out.
Anyone looking for a nice trail horse, here he is!
Lady's new mommy e-mailed me to tell me she is doing great.
We miss her but I'm thrilled she is happy.
I was out to Regina's last weekend and got to see Champ and Dreamer.
Dreamer is a BIG guy now. I'll get some new pictures soon. Champ looks amazing. I can't even explain how
handsome this horse is. He went from skin and bones to big and fat! He is a pleasure to be around.
All
in all every one is well! Keep warm everyone.
12/1/09- Today I would like to congratulate Jeannine on her adoption of Lady. Best of luck with her! I can't
wait to see her once she is fully trained. Lady is a special horse who really made her way into many peoples hearts.
Please
spread the word about the other horses that we have for adoption. They all need homes and would LOVE a home before the
winter sets in. We have some special horses who have a lot of love to give. Please consider giving one of these
amazing horses a home!
11/22/09-Hi Everyone! Sorry no updates for a few weeks! Things have been very busy at the rescue!!!
Sal, Grace, and Lady are now located in Brookville and are all available for adoption! Lady is now under saddle and
is coming along nicely! She is such a sweet horse and everyone who meets her loves her. She is one of my favorites.
Sal
is looking for his forever home. If you know anyone who needs a companion PLEASE consider looking at him. He is
a GREAT horse, I spend the most time with him then any other horse in our rescue and I can guarantee he is the perfect horse.
He can be lightly ridden but really just needs someone who wants a buddy to hang around with.
Chloe is now at
a foster in Northport and is doing very well. She is coming along nicely and I will have some new pictures of her under
tack soon.
Billy has put on a lot of weight and looks AMAZING! He would be GREAT for someone looking to trail
ride lightly and have an amazing horse. Come meet him and fall in love. Thank you to his amazing foster, Roxanne,
for doing wonders with him. He certainly is a sweet boy.
Champ, Dreamer, and Petunia are all doing well.
Champ is now under saddle and is just a DOLL! Sweetest horse in the world and is very calm and easy going. Would
be an awesome horse for someone who is looking for a calm, no spook horse. Dreamer and Petunia are growing up and are
doing really well. They are both VERY easy to handle and would be a great addition to any family. Come meet them
and your heart will melt. I can't imagine how they ended up in the kill pen!
Austin and Ruthie are both looking
for new fosters so if you have an empty stall PLEASE consider fostering. Both very nice horses and are hoping to find
their forever homes soon!
I think I covered every horse but if not they are all doing amazing. Please spread the
word about our amazing horses. They are all VERY sweet and would love to be apart of your family. If you
know anyone looking for a horse, point them in our direction.
We are always in need of donations of hay/grain
so if you are interested in helping out contact us!
9/9/09- First off, congrats to Denise on her adoption of Liberty. It was great to see her today. She looks
amazing! I was so happy to be able to see her in her field so happy and healthy. It makes the stress of the rescue
easier to deal with when you see a happy ending.
I'm starting a lesson program to help pay some of the rescue's bills.
Lessons given on our rescue horses in the Brookville area or I can come to your barn. VERY resonable prices and you
will get to enjoy meeting some of our rescue horses! E-mail me at Sportie1030@aol.com for more info!
9/5/09- Happy Labor Day weekend! Hope everyone is enjoying it! First off, congrats to Vanessa on her adoption
of Lily. We are so thrilled that our baby has a home to call her own. A few quick updates. Sal and Grace
are now located at a foster in the Brookville area. Thank you to Erica, Katie, and Belle for helping me SO much and
donating your barn to the rescue. Sal and Grace are loving their HUGE grass field that they get to play in all day.
Yesterday I rode both Sal and Grace. Both horses were absolutely perfect. Sal was such a gentlemen under
tack and was a blast to ride! I'm not used to riding gaited horses but all I can say was that it was so much fun!!!
I loved it!!! He's just so comfortable and so much fun to ride!
Lady is now at a foster in Bohemia with Janet.
We will be starting to work with her in the next couple of week and we hope to have her going under tack soon.
I know she will be easy to work with because she is just so sweet on the ground.
We will also have Champ under
saddle this week and I will post some pictures and updates of how he did.
We are having a fundraiser at West
Hills Saddlery on September 12th and 13th. The store will be donating 10% of everything sold those days so PLEASE stop
in and buy some things. The store is closing so everything is up to 50% off!!!! Pat Bono will be in the store on Sept
13th from 12-5 doing readings and she will donate a percentage to Project Sage. Come out and support the Project Sage
horses!!! Hope to see everyone there...
8/19/09-
So much to update on! Last weekend we were at an event at The Little Shelter in Huntington where we
educated the public on horse slaughter and got the word out about our rescue. It was a great event and we hope lots
of dogs and cats got adopted!!!
We have had a few adoptions over the summer including Archie, Cassie, and Justice.
We wish them all the best in their new homes. All of our horses are making a lot of progress and them are all hoping
to find their new homes soon. Let me update everyone on a few of the Project Sage horses. First off, Promise,
our resident is doing amazing. She is now located at my personal barn and is doing great. She gets along great
with my two horses and is really learning to trust. We have grown attached to each other and I finally feel like we
are making a lot of progress. Promise does cost the rescue a lot per month so donations on her name are greatly appreciated.
She would also love a bag of treats, a new nylon halter, and a bottle of fly spray. Billy is now located at a wonderful
foster in Millneck. Thank you to Roxanne for offering her barn and love to another Project Sage horse. Roxanne
fostered Archie for us until he was adopted. We are looking forward to seeing Billy make some huge changes over the
next few months. He will be available for adoption after he is evaluated and relaxes for a few weeks. Chloe is
another horse I would like to bring some attention to. Chris, our exercise rider, came out and rode her last week and
she did amazing. Chris reported that she walked and trotted with ease and anyone would be lucky to have her. She
is quick learner and is a few weeks she will be cantered with no problems at all. She has come along on the ground and
is now very easy to work with. She is a wonderful horse with a huge heart.
Champ is also doing amazing
at his foster in Central Islip with Regina. He's fat and has a mane now! Regina also fosters Petunia and Dreamer
and I'm happy to say that they are all doing amazing! If you are looking for a project take a look at these two babies.
They are the two sweetest horses I have ever met. Both are going to be so easy to break. They are trained in Parelli,
pick up all 4 feet, lead, stand for farrier, etc. I can't say enough good things about them.
Sal and Grace are
now up for adoption so if you had your eye on them e-mail me to set up an appointment to come and look at them. Thank
you to Eileen and Myrna for fostering them over the past few months. Sal and Grace both look amazing and they are looking
for their forever homes.
Ruthie is another horse that I love. I worked with her yesterday on the ground and Jessica
lunged her and she went really nicely. She is young and likes to play but is level headed if she is worked everyday.
She is learning that the fly spray won't kill her and no one is going to hurt her. This is filly that I'm sure had been
abused before she came to us. She is looking for someone who is looking for a project horse. She is a very nice
mover and has the speed to be a nice barrel horse in the future.
Lady and Lily are doing well also! We
are moving them to a new foster this week so I will post some new picture when I get them. Lady is another horse that
I think would be a great project for someone. She has endless possibilities an is a very nice mare.
We are looking
for donations of hay and grain right now as we are moving 2 horses to a rough board barn. We are also looking for volunteers
to help out and muck stalls and groom some horses! We are taking grain donations of Country Acres 12% Pellets, Country
Acres 12% Sweet Feed, Poulin Grain Pro-Max, Poulin Grain Forage Extender, Black Oil Sun Flower Seeds, Hay Cubes, and hay donations
of 1st or 2nd cut hay. If everyone bought one bag of grain or one bale of hay it would help the rescue out a lot.
We are at our maximum capacity for horse right now so every donation helps!!!
If you have every considered fostering
a Project Sage horse now is the time to e-mail me. We need fosters badly at this time of the year so please e-mail me
for more information. We are also always collecting used tack to sell at garage sales and swap meets so go through your
tack room and donate any spare tack that you have. It will not only help the rescue but it will leave you with less
clutter!!!
Please spread the word about the horses we have for adoption. They are all ready for new homes
so please consider adoption before buying!!!
A few people I have to thank before I wrap this up. As always Jessica
for being an amazing foster and friend and someone who helps me through so many problems that we run into on a daily basis.
The rescue can be very stressful at times and Jess always helps me figure it out. Thank you to my mom for always listening
to me blabber about the rescue horses for hours at a time. There is not an hour that goes by that I'm not thinking about
my rescue horses and thing I can do to improve their lives. Thank you Beth Boyce for always helping me out mucking stalls,
doing home checks, grooming, waiting for Austin to pee in a cup, and helping out at fundraisers. And for being Austins
sponsor. It is a huge help and we really value having you as a volunteer. Thanks to all of my fosters for helping
out and taking such good care of the horses. Thank you to all of my adopters for opening your hearts and homes to these
amazing horses. Special thanks for Regina for fostering the babies and Champ and rehabbing them. Every horse that
walks in your barn comes out a different horse. They learn to trust and love...Champ is a prime example. Thank
you to Chris, our amazing exercise rider, for helping me so much this summer. You made Archie into an amazing horse
and put up with me being so nervous all the time! I'm sure I'm missing a few people that I wanted to thank but for now
that's it! Have a good day everyone!!!
7/24/09- Sorry I have not updated in a few weeks! Things have been going great for all of our horses!!! I just
want to say to Congrats to Lisa on her adoption of Justice and Cynthia on her adoption of Archie. I wish you all the
best with these two amazing horses.
We also have a pending adoption for Cassie so all in all things are going good for
our horses!
Thank you to everyone who came out to the tack fundraiser. It was a great day and we had a lot of
fun seeing everyone. Thank you so much to Judy G and the girl scouts who sold lemonade for us. You girls did a
great job!!! Thank to Judy for also making great first aid kits to raise some money!!
Sal is now up for adoption
so if anyone has had their eye on him he's now avaliable! Champ will also be avaliable soon so please consider adopting
him!
6/30/09-Project Sage Horse Rescue is now joined up with Triple Crown and Southern States horse feed! We have signed
up for the SHOW program! Thank you to Lindsey from Neptune Feeds for suggesting this and for bringing out the rep to
my barn to speak to me about the different feeds they offer.
The SHOW program is basically collecting the "Proof
of Purchase" (bar code) on the back of your Triple Crown, Legends, or Reliance grain! All you have to do it cut
them out and mail them to Project Sage and we recieve money for every one we send in!
PLEASE, if you feed these types
of grains take a minute and cut out the proof of purchases on the bags! If you board your horse please talk to the barn
owner about what type of feed they are using. It only takes a minute to do this and it will really help the rescue horses.
If you would like to help by donating your proof of puchases to Project Sage Horse Rescue please e-mail Sportie1030@aol.com
6/27/09- Hi Everyone! I'm going to CT today to pick up two dogs that were going to be put down in a high kill
shelter. They need homes ASAP! If you are interested PLEASE call me at 516-807-3364 or e-mail me at Sportie1030@aol.com.
~~
They are both young dachshund crosses and are fixed and UTD on ALL shots! Please consider giving one of
them a home!!
Hugh and Henry! They can be seperated so please consider giving one of them a home!

6/26/09- Everyone check out Channel 12 news today. Every hour there will be a clip on Project Sage!! Check it out.
We
will be having a garage sale in a few weeks along with a tack sale so please go through all of your things and if you have
anything to donate please e-mail me at Sportie1030@aol.com
6/21/09-

was going to fall off and for donating some great baskets!!
Thank you the everyone who bought items in the store
and donated them to the rescue. It is a huge help.
It's so good to see so many of my amazing adopters and fosters
in one day. You all are amazing people and it was great to hear stories of the horses we have adopted out and the ones that
are in foster care.
Thank you to everyone who donated used tack today. We will put it to good use.
Thank
you to Jim Gaffney (exercise rider of Secretariat) for coming out to meet me and support the rescue. It was an honor to meet
you!
All in all it was a great day!
I'm sorry if I missed you but THANK YOU!
Other then the event
I want to thank Special Agent Anne Marie Lucas and everyone at the ASPCA for sending me items for the Chinese Auction
and for the gorgeous signed pictures.

6/9/09- Our Chinese Auction fundraiser is on June 20th! I need your help! I still need items for the Chinese
Auction! Please if you have anything new laying around e-mail me! We are also looking for gift certificates of
ANY kind!
Thank you to Barbara A for writing a great article on Project Sage. Check it out here:
http://www.horsemanmagazine.com/2009/06/project-sage-a-long-island-horse-rescue/
I would also like to thank Jim Gaffney for donating signed pictures for our Chinese Auction. For those of you
who don't know Jim was the exercise rider of the famous Secretariat. The pictures are gorgeous! Thank you
so much Jim.
More thanks to go around...Thank you to the FOB's for their constant support. They are an amazing
group of people and are always there to lend a helping hand when we are going through a tough time. A huge thank
you to Regina and John for working their tails off to rehab Champ, Dreamer, and Petunia. It is the best rehab case we
have had thus far and I owe that to Regina and John. When I first met Champ he could barely walk off
the trailer. He was skinny and malnourished and had no life in his eyes. Now, a few months later he is trotting
around his turn out with a spark in his eyes that I thought I would never see. Congrats to Regina and John on an
amazing rehab.
Remember it is adoption month! All adoption fee's are $200 off!! So please spread
the word about some of the amazing horses that we have for adoption.
I've been working with Archie the past couple
of days on the ground and he is learning quickly. He has so much love to give to the right person...
Lily and
Lady are now up for adoption! Lily is a gorgeous foal and would be a great addition to ANY family! If you
would like to meet Lily please e-mail me!
6/1/09- This past Saturday we celebrated the wedding of two amazing people that have helped me immensely over the past
year. Congrats to Jessica and Augie!!! We had an amazing time at the wedding and Jessica looked amazing!
I started to cry when she walked in, she looks so beautiful! The Project Sage family wishes you the best of luck for
the future. We love you both!
~~~
Sunday, Project Sage attended the Doggie "U" Dog Day. We were so happy to be invited! Project
Sage had a table set up educating people on the horrors of horse slaughter and selling our merchandise! It was a great
day and we raised a lot of money! It was great to see how many people were interested in the rescue! Thank you
to everyone who stopped by and donated. Special thanks to my mom who spent the day with me talking to people about the
rescue and helping me set everything up! It was a really fun day and I was so excited that over 20 people recognized
me from the news! Project Sage just gets bigger everyday...It's a good feeling when you know all of your hard work is
paying off.
~~~
~~~
Today, we are moving Promise to my personal barn to spend some times with my horses in our grass pasture! I'm
so excited and I will be going out soon to set up her stall and get everything ready.
In other news, congrats to Elise
on her adoption of Shadow who she calls "Bill". I'm so happy about this adoption. Best of
luck to both Bill and Elise! Elise told me Bill loves to go for rides in the park and is a real character. Also,
please check out the events section. We are having out 2nd Annual Chinese Auction!! I'm very excited about this
event and I'm hoping a lot of people will come. Spread the word!
5/28/09- So, I'm sooo excited! We were on Channel 7 news tonight at 5:00 and the e-mails are pouring in!!!
If you have e-mailed me I will get back to you as soon as possible! My mailbox is packed with people. I want to
thank Lisa for calling in an order today to the tack shop for bags and bags of horse treats along with fly spray. Thank
you Lisa and I'm looking forward to meeting you soon!
They also have an article
on their site:
LONG ISLAND (WABC) -- Her life mission is to save
horses. And, in fact, she has already rescued dozens from certain death in a slaughterhouse. And she's only a teenager.
While
most teenagers are out playing sports, shopping at the mall and going to parties in their free time, this Long Islander is
making it her mission to save the animals she loves. And in three short years, she's already made a difference.
"I
found him at a feed lot in New Jersey," Britanny Rostron said. "He was pacing back and forth."
Rostron
knew what she had to do when she saw the Appaloosa.
"I said I'd give him $50 for the horse, so I walked in, grabbed
him and loaded him onto the trailer."
And she brought him to Manorville, on Long Island, where Jessica Pecce has
other horses and lots of land. She's taken in a handful of horses, sight-unseen, inspired by Britanny, whose goal is to keep
horses from being slaughtered.
Brittany started riding when she was 5, and when she was 16, she started Project Sage,
a horse rescue non-profit.
She rehabs the horses, gets them to a good weight and then finds someone to permanently
adopt them.
Caring for a horse is expensive business, so Brittany relies on lots of donations, adoption fees and horse
lovers like Jessica.
Pecce currently fosters three horses, and she's already adopted one.
"It's worth it,"
she said, to save a horse that is destined for the slaughterhouse.
Adopting a Project Sage horse costs anywhere from
$100 to $1,500. That's thousands, even tens of thousands less than market rate. So far, Britanny has rescued 31 horses.
"They're
living, breathing animals," she said. "And people treat them like they're disposable and they're not."
And
Britanny has big plans, despite her age and the tough economy. She wants to provide a sanctuary for the animals she loves
so much.
"Hopefully by the time I'm 21," she said. "That's my dream."
And there are plenty
of horses right now that need to be fostered and adopted. If you're interested, or if you just want to help Project Sage,
visit ProjectSageHorseRescue.org or call 516-807-3364.
5/15/09- I've been getting tons of e-mails that I need to update the blog! Sorry everyone!! I've been finishing up
my spring semester in school! All the horses are doing great - We moved Archie to a new wonderful foster with Roxanne
in Millneck. He loves his new set up and we hope he will find his new home soon. We will be on channel 7 news
this coming Monday at 5:00! Please tune in and watch and see some of our rescue horses on their TV debut.
We
will be at a Pet Expo on May 31st! I will be posting more information about it shortly. Our Chinese Auction is
going to be held sometime in June at West Hills Saddlery so please check back so you can participate in this wonderful event.
Last year we raised a lot of money and we hope to double it this year!
Our juice pouch fundraiser is going strong!
We have collected more then 700 juice pouches thus far!
Now is the time to send in a spring donation to help
one of our horses. Times are tough for everyone but the rescue horses need your help! Any donation will help them.
Whether it's $5, $10, or $20. No donation is too small. Your donations are tax deductible!!!!
The foals
are doing amazing and are really coming along under the care of Regina and John. They are also fostering Champ and he
is doing outstanding. New pictures will be posted soon. Champ has put on so much weight and he is really doing
great. The foals are so social now and just love people! It's amazing to see the changes in them in such a short
period of time. Props to Regina and John for taking on the challenge and working with these two adorable babies.
Ruthie
is also making huge improvements and is doing great. Jessica has taken up the Parelli training and is doing great with
it. Thank you again to Regina and John for taking the time out and driving out to play with Ruthie.
Summer
is right around the corner and these horses need homes. Please spread the word about the Project Sage horses.
They would love for someone to take them home for the summer.
Remember: If you are thinking about donating NOW is the
time. No matter how small the donation is!!!
4/2/09- Everyday I am sent pictures of horses that are minutes away from the slaughter truck. We try to help as many
as possible. Rescues all over the United States are always working together to place horses into homes and rescues.
Two days ago I spotted an appy mare who was significantly lame . A lame horse does not stand a chance at an auction.
I looked at this mare's picture and tried to figure something out for her. Unfortunately I got an e-mail shortly
after that this mare was put on the truck. I will always remember her face - The one that slipped through the cracks.
I pray for that mare.
On a positive note...Chloe is going really nice under saddle. She now w/t/c's
for an intermediate to expereiced rider. If anyone is in the market for a jumper, here she is. She can turn on
a dime and will be amazing where ever she goes. She is put together nicely and is become very friendly.
Our
Chinese Auction is in the planning stages. We are now collecting items for baskets for the auction. Last year
we raised a lot of money for the rescue horses. We are hoping to double it this time around! Please consider collecting
new items around your house for our Chinese Auction. We also take gift certificates. Please, if you know someone
who runs a company ask them to donate to our Chinese Auction. It is a tax write-off for them!
Swap night
is on Saturday night...Please go through all of your tack. We have another swap meet at the end of the month so we need
more tack to sell! We tack any tack or horse related item.
We are now also beginning to take other items to sell
on Craigs List and E bay. These items do not have to be new. Things that we could sell easily and make some money
for our rising hay costs.
I am considering have another garage sale for the rescue. We had one last year
and it was great! I was wondering if anyone would be interested in holding a garage sale for Project Sage at their house?
Please e-mail me if you are interested!
We are also looking for a monthly sponsor for Champ, Petunia, and Dreamer.
Petunia-$50.00 donation a month
Dreamer-$50.00 donation a month
Champ-$200.00 donation a month
Please
consider helping!!!
3/29/09- On Friday I got to spend a lot of time with Yankee, one of our adopter horses. Jessica had adopted him the
day we rescued him - Only a few short days after she lost her best friend, Jetta, I told her about a 30 year old appy that
was to be sent to slaughter. Without hesitation she said she would take him. It takes a special person to take
a horse of that age. Yankee was a mess - Scared of people - Scared of his own shadow - You really could not move fast
around him. It was sad to see a horse that old in such bad condition.
Well on Friday I spent two hours
clipping Yankee for Jessica. He has a skin condition from being so neglected that is still a "work in progress".
Jessica changed this horse. He now comes right over to you and will put his head on your shoulder. Love and care
turned him around. He is known as "The Mayor" around the barn...
Chloe was ridden on Friday and
did AMAZING! She w/t/c's with a good rider on her back. She is so young and will go places with the right
rider/trainer. I see a bright future for this horse. She has also become good on the ground.
We are
always collecting used tack to sell at swap meets. We will take ANY used/new/old tack that you have that you no longer
want. We have drop off points all over Long Island.
Everything else is going well. All horses are doing
well. Thank you to everyone who has signed up for the "Just One Cup" fundraiser. It is a huge help!
3/21/09- Today Petunia and Dreamer were moved to Regina's for temporary fostering. Thank you Sabrina for trailering
for us! Thank you Regina for taking the foals! They loaded great and Regina and her husband were amazing with
the foals. It was interesting to watch the natural methods that they used. The foals really respoonded well and
seemed very calm!
Today we also took new x-rays of Cassie's legs to get a better idea of what we can do to
make her sound. We are very close and I'm hoping to adopt her out as a riding horse eventually. She did great
and loved the attention! She is such a sweet horse and I know someone will fall in love with her one day!
Yesterday
Ruthie was moved to Jessica's for fostering. She is a really nice little lady and has really put on a good amount
of weight! She is looking great. Thank to you to Holly for shipping for us!
Yesterday Chloe
was also ridden and she did amazing for her first time since we rescued her! Although she will need an experienced rider
she was very well behaved for such a young horse. She did amazing and we were all thrilled!
On Thursday Ginger
was adopted and moved to her new home! We found out that 2 other mini's that were on the broker lot the week we
rescued Ginger were also rescued by a barn in Baiting Hollow. Sharon contacted me to inquire if Ginger was the horse
she had seen on the broker lot. We have a feeling that Ginger is some how related to one of her mini's, Indy.
Sharon reports that Indy was excited to see Ginger and they are all reunited and happy! It's a happy success story
for Ginger...
Tomorrow I show a few potential adopters some of our horses - keep you fingers crossed!
Thank
you to Judy for donating much needed medical supplies to the rescue. We ALWAYS need medical supplies. Every day
there is a need for these items.
Yesterday we also went through a lot of the donated tack and prepared for the
swap meet! We are excited to sell, sell, sell at the swap! Jessica is now starting a "Pop's for Ponies"
fundraiser to raise money for hay, grain, and shavings. The costs are rising so please consider buying some lolli pops
at the swap meet!
If you would like to make a donation of hay, shavings, or grain please contact me. Even if you
can spare one bale of hay it would be much appreciated!
An update on Champ: I spent some time with him
today and he is doing great. We are looking for a new foster home for him so we can get him out of the quaretine barn
as he is now feeling 100% better. He needs to gain another 200 lbs but is feeling good. He is doing great and
is looking forward to finding his forever home soon!
Eileen that fosters Salvato called yesterday to give an update.
Sal is doing great and Eileen is really falling in love. They are starting to get out on the trails and if he keeps
doing well on the trails we are hoping that Eileen will adopt. They have a very strong bond already. Sometimes
horses and people just click.
I was able to check in on Lady and Lily today. They both looked amazing and Lily
is really growing! She is a large foal and is so sweet. I was also able to see two of our adopted horses today,
Sandy and Patriot. They both looked great and I was so happy to be able to see them.
Please keep collecting
your juice pouches. I already have a huge bag of them! Thank you to everyone who is collecting for Project Sage.
Another busy weekend for Brittany...Weekends fly by...No time to relax...
Rest
in Peace Augie
May angels lead you in. . .
You will be forever missed and many horses will be rescued in your
name. Be good in horsey heaven sweet boy. One day I will see you again. . .
Hi Everyone,
We are starting two new fundraiser's - I urge everyone to try
to participate in at least one!!!
First:
We are now collected drink pouches. It is not only good
for the environment but for every drink pouch that we send in they will donate to Project Sage! Drink pouches
include Capri Sun, Kool Aid, Honest Kids, etc. It has to be a pouch, not a juice box. They will take ANY brand.
We
are hoping to get a few schools or girl/boy scout troops involved with this so we will have a ton of pouches to send
in! We have set up various drop off points for your drink pouches around Long Island. Everyone that has children
throws away these pouches. Just put them in a bag and give them to Project Sage!
Second:
We
are starting a "Just One Cup" fundraiser. This is how it works...You give up one cup of coffee and donate
$5.00 a month to Project Sage Horse Rescue. It's just $5.00!!! At the end of every month a reminder will go
out to everyone signed up for the "Just One Cup" fundraiser. This is a chance for every one to get involved
and help. $5.00 is equivalent to one cup of Starbucks coffee! It's that easy...
If you would like
to sign up for the "Just One Cup" fundraiser please e-mail
Sportie1030@aol.com and I will add you to the list. If every single one of you joined up it would really add up. Don't let this
fundraiser pass you by!
Times are tough for everyone but please try to participate in one of these fundraiser's.
Forward this one of all of your friends and family!
Thank you!
Rest in Peace Augie...You will be forever
missed...I know Sage will take care of you...
3/14/09 UPDATE- Project Sage is now in Facebook! Search "Brittany-Project Sage" and send us a friend request!!!
See pictures that I don't get a chance to post on the web site. I have tons of pictures up there already.
3/14/09- Tomorrow will probably be one of the hardest days for me since I started Project Sage. Tomorrow we say good
bye to Augie and help him cross the rainbow bridge. Since the day I paid $250.00 for him it has been a struggle.
Hard decisions have to be made when you know a horse is getting worse. 4 vets and 2 surgeons have consulted on his case
and everyone feels it's time to say good bye. This little horse pushed me to help more "special needs"
horses. Promise, Champ, Cassie, and Cosmo all came to our rescue as rehab cases.
When I met Augie I knew
I had to help him. He stood in his stall and nibbled on my hand begging me to help him. Two days later he was
at his foster home. A little less then a year has passed and everyone that meets this horse falls in love with his personality.
He is identical to Sage, my late OTTB. Losing him is like losing Sage all over again. I look into his eyes and
wish there was more I could do. Everyone tells me I am doing the right thing. It still hurts and
I will miss his greatly. Only 2 years old and already crippled beyond the point of repair. It's a sin
that someone let him get this way. His story will push me to rescue more horses who have faced severe neglect.
Thank you to Donna K for sponsoring him when he first came to our rescue. Thank you to Jackie for
fostering him and showing him love. Thank you to Dr. Doran at Mid-Atlantic for donating Augie's whole visit to the
hospital. Thank you Jerry Trapani for donating many of Augie's trims and always helping us with him. Thank
you to Jessica and Dr. Beth Scallen who will both be there tomorrow.
Tomorrow I say good bye to the first horse that
I rescued on Long Island. With a mouthful of horse treats he will leave us to a better place. A place where he
won't feel any pain...
The amount of time and work that goes into this rescue is more then most people would ever
believe. I love every second of it. I love every horse that comes through my rescue. I love seeing horses
in new homes. Horse rescue also comes with heart break. Seeing the horses that we have to leave behind is the
hardest part. Augie will never see the inside of a slaughter horse. This is one of the reasons I can say good
bye knowing that he will go the way every horse should. No horse deserves to see the inside of the slaughter house.
No horse deserves to take that ride to Canada or Mexico. No horse deserves to be on a dinner plate.
Our costs
are rising greatly everyday. If you can spare $5 a month it would be a huge help. That is one cup of
Starbucks coffee!!! $5 a month - It's nothing to one person - If everyone donated $5 it would help pay for our vet
bill for the month - It will put a dent in our farrier bill - It will help with our hay bill. Only $5 in an envelope.
It's so simple...Send your $5 today!
3/9/09- Everyday I am planning fundraisers for Project Sage. It takes up so much time to think up and plan
fundraisers. I try to have at least one a month to help cover the vet, farrier, and feed bills for the rescue horses.
Here is my challenge to everyone that reads this blog. Plan a small or large fundraiser for Project Sage. Some
ideas that I have thought of but have not gotten around to planning: A bowling fundraiser, a dinner dance, a soft ball game, etc.
If you can plan a Project Sage fundraiser please e-mail me. I will list them on our web site and I will come to every
single fundraiser that is planned. This is a challenge for everyone! Even if you raise $50 it will help buy wormers
for all of our horses for a month!
3/7/09-Today we say good bye to Cinny. He was adopted by Greenlawn Eq Center. Best of luck with him he is a
special horse! On Tuesday we welcome back Grace into our rescue. She will be avaliable for adoption soon.
A huge thank you to Donna for sending Project Sage gold. She is donating all of the proceeds to Project Sage
Horse Rescue.
A huge thank you to Jen for sending me TONS of gauze!!! Thank you!!!
A huge thank you
Eileen for donating some tack today when I visited Sal.
Today I went out to visit Sal at his foster home. He is
looking amazing and we have high hopes that an adoption will be in the near future.
Please check out our page
of avaliable horses. I just added 3 new horses this week that all need a loving home. Please also spread the word
about the pasture buddies that we have listed. They all need homes and sometimes people forget about them.
3/1/09- Yesterday Cosmo was adopted by Dorothy. We were all thrilled that he will getting such a great home!!!
Champ, Ruthie, Petunia, and Dreamer are all doing well. They will all be avaliable for adoption soon so if anyone is
interested please let me know. I went out to visit Promise yesterday and was thrilled with how good she looked.
Cara and Pat, her fosters, are doing an amazing job with her and she has gained tons of weight!
We are really
in need of medical supplies. Rubber gloves, gause, betadine, vasaline, furazone, etc. If anyone has any that
they would like to donate please e-mail me. We are also in need of fly sheets/boots/masks for the horses as fly season
is right a round the corner.
Thank you to everyone who made if out to our last fundraiser. Thank you to
Paul for holding the event and donating 10% of everything sold that day!!!! We have some more fundraiser in the works
for the spring so keep and eye on the events page. Thank you to Jessica for having a Pampered Chef Party last night
- a donation was made by Pampered Chef as Jessica booked it the day we had ours!
We have many nice horses avaliable for
adoption right now. Spread the word!
2/24/09- People always ask me where I get my inspiration from to keep this rescue going. It's hard work - Many
days I am running all over Long Island to show horses, meet people, plan fundraiser's, and feed my own horses! Well,
a 10 year old girl has given me enough inspiration to keep going for another 100 years! In lieu of gifts Lily had all
of her friends make a donation to Project Sage for her 10th birthday. Lily, your parents should be so proud that you
did this at such a young age. When I got Lily's letter with the donations from her friends I had to call all of
the people that help me daily with my rescue. Many people were brought to tears by what this young girl had done for
horses in need. I have never had such a young person step in and help so much. Thank you again Lily. You
are a role model for children all over and I hope many people will follow in your foot steps.
Our fundraiser
went great over the weekend. Thank you Paul for allowing this fundraiser to happen for donating 10% of everything sold
that day!!! Thank you to Liza who called in a donation so I could shop for the rescue horses. We bought medical
supplies that were VERY much needed. Thank you to Jerry and Rita for the amazing cake and tack donations. Thank
you for everyone who came and shopped and made donations to Project Sage. It was a great day. . .
2/12/09- Check this out: http://www.talkinhorsestv.com/ They did a show on Project Sage. You can watch it and see some of the Project Sage horses!!!
2/6/09- Well, I some times forget to give credit to people who help "behind the scenes" with the Project Sage
horses. Most of you know Jessica, one of my fosters and adopters, her fiance Augie is always helping out with the rescue
horses!!! He does a lot of barn work for the horses his family is fostering and many people have seen
him at Project Sage fundraiser's carrying tack and helping us set up. Thank you Augie for always being a good
sport while Jessica and I are on a mission to save a horse.
Today Jessica, Augie, and I were out with the four
new horses. We weighed, measured, and wormed all four. A HUGE thank you for Donna for sending us five brand new
halters, leads, and a container of treats. Our four new horses got to wear their new halters today while playing
out in the snow. We are working with Dreamer to help him trust. Today we worked on leading in and out
of the stall. By the end of the day he seemed calmer and a bit more trusting. It took us some time
to catch him once we was out but after some time of us all laughing and him trotting away we finally caught him and brought
him in for his lunch. The filly on the other hand walks right over and walks right in her stall. She is such
a good little girl. Champ took a good roll in the snow and walked around with the foals. The appy
yearling whom we have named "Ruthie" is also doing great! She leads and is a gorgeous mover. Ruthie
is very friendly and playful. They all looked great in their new halters!!! Today was a great
day watching these four run in the snow. If it was not for the many people involved with their rescue (Thank you Jill
and her students for sponsoring the two foals!!!) they would not be with us today.
Pictures from today:
Left: Dreamer...He will be avaliable for adoption soon to an approved training home. He is a really nice mover and would
be very well suited to the hunter ring!
Bottom Right: Still trying to weight Ruthie!!! As you can tell she
is very easy going about this. Very sweet girl!
2/3/09- We are going to be at the IHA swap meet in March selling tack that has been donated over the past 6 months by
very generous people on Long Island! We have everything (western, english, dressage) under the sun to sell!! Please
come stop by our tables at the IHA swap! We will have some great buys and will also be selling out Project Sage bags,
sweatshirts, t-shits, and wrist bands! If anyone has any tack laying around that they would like to donate please let
me know. You can e-mail me at Sportie1030@aol.com. Last year we raised $850 at the swap meet. This year we hope to raise over a $1000. The more tack we have
the more money we will raise!!! Please stop by and say hello!
Our four new horses are doing well. Champ
has been having a rough few days. Please keep him in your prayers. Due to his age and the severe neglect he has
endured he is having many problems. I want to thank our amazing vet, Dr. Beth Scallen, for being so dedicated to this
group of horses. Thank you to everyone who has donated to their vet bills. I will keep you posted on Champ and
how the next few days ago. I am planning an open house for Archie. I have gotten several e-mails about him
so I am going to have a day for anyone who is interested to come out and meet him. It is too frozen to ride but you
can get an idea of what a sweet boy he is. I will post this information when I decide a day! Keep warm...Spring
is right around the corner...
1/30/09 -Our four new horses are doing great! Cathy, their foster, reports that the filly has really come around
and is VERY sweet. The colt is also getting used to people. It is obvious that they have not had much human
interaction yet. All of my fosters have a way of teaching these horses trust and love. These two foals were probably
out in a field for 6 months not being handled. Then they were shipped off to an auction...What was the point
of breeding these two foals if they were auction bound? Just two more horses put on the earth for someone to care for.
Well, now they are safe and happy. We planned on working with them today on leading but the ice will not permit us to
do this!
Champ is also doing well. He has been through a lot in his life and when you look at him
you can tell he is happy to be safe. He really loves attention and people. More pictures will be posted tomorrow.
We have some good news .... WE ARE NOW A 501(c)3!!!!!!!!! Check out the sponorship page for all new ways
to help from the comfort of your home!!!
1/27/09- Yesterday we got in four new horses that were destined for slaughter. Two of them were saved through Cody's
fund. We now have two foals, a yearling, and a senior TB that are in quarentine. All four are sick and have seen
the vet. They have upper resp. infections that are being treated. I decided to take Champ into our rescue in memory
of Cody, my horse who passed away 4 weeks ago. Champ is very skinny and needs a lot of TLC. He is happy to be
safe. Thank you SO much to Cathy and her family for taking in all four horses for quarentine. The appy filly will
be going to Jessica for fostering. Cathy will be fostering the foals until we can find them their forever homes.
They are adorable and will make nice riding ponies in a few years. We were thrilled to take this group of horses in.
Cody's Fund is off to a great start and two foals are now alive because of it. Thank you to everyone who helped
out. These horses need everyone's help with donations as they are all on medicine and will be kept under the watchful
eye of our vet. They would all love new halters/leads and wormers. All four horses are VERY sweet and are coming
along well!!! Check out pictures and info under Horses in Rehab.
1/17/09- WE HAVE A BABY!!!! Yesterday morning we welcomed Ladies new baby into the world. At approx 8 am she
delivered a healty chestnut filly with a big white blaze! It was an amazing day to watch this little filly walk around
and learn to nurse!!! Darlene did an amazing job with this mare. She taught her how to trust and love. Everyone
at Hillcrest deserves a HUGE thank you for spending so much time with Lady. We will keep everyone updated on the newest
Project Sage addition.
